Less than a quarter of all adults in the United States are considered obese, but the numbers of kids being raised as overweight or obese are climbing, and a new study of the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) suggests that weight problems are now ubiquitous for young people. The NSFG, conducted in 2014 by the U.S. Bureau of the Census and released today, examined the growth of child and adolescent obesity among youths. The results revealed that about 27.2% of American children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 were either overweight or obese in 2014, a slight increase from the 26.3% obesity rate reported in 2007. According to the NSFG, between 2007 and 2014 the rate of overweight children between the ages of 2 and 5 increased 1.3 percentage points and the rate of obese children increased 4.6 percentage points — more than doubling. The rate of overweight and obese children between the ages of 6 and 11 nearly doubled, and between 12 and 17 the rate of obesity doubled from 7.7% to 15.9%. Researchers compared the rate of obesity to a projected population by race, and found that among young people, whites had the highest rates. In 2014, 30.6% of white children and adolescents, 29.2% of black children and adolescents, and 26.3% of Hispanic children and adolescents were either obese or overweight. The NSFG also revealed that the rate of obesity in youth is increasing across all age groups. While the rate of obesity was 15.9% among 12- to 17-year-olds in 2014, this number was only 13.5% in 2002. It reached 18.5% in 2007, and peaked at 21.1% in 2010. While it has dropped in recent years, the obesity rate rose among 2- to 5-year-olds in 2014 (7.8% in 2014, compared to 5.6% in 2002). The survey also tracked sex ratios among adolescents, and found that the obesity rate was 1.6 times higher among girls 82138339de
